![]() Guard & Receiver (matching serial number) Guard only. The Cody Museum letter for a model 1890 says it was originally a WRF built in 1902. Carrier (lifter) 1890 includes lever Specify: Short / Long / Long Rifle / WRF (special) Carrier Lever. My best guess is that I have a model 1906 that was rebarreled, but it could be a restocked, rebarreled model 1890, or maybe it was made up (but probably not by the factory) from parts. The barrel is a Winchester factory (not aftermarket) barrel that was made sometime around 1930. Based on proof marks on the barrel and receiver (thanks to Trapp55 for lots of work deciphering the proof marks to identify the barrel), the rifle was rebarreled, probably not by the factory, around 1930. It has1906 wood and a 22LR octagonal barrel. The question is whether there two with the same serial number. My understanding is that Winchester used the same receiver for both the 18. I need suggestions as to who can do the job well, at a reasonable price.Does anybody know if Winchester made duplicate model 1890 / 1906 receivers with the same serial numbers?Īccording to the Winchester Collectors list (thanks to Tuckerd1 for putting lots of good reference material on TFF last year), a Winchester model 1890 serial # 139379 was built in1902 and a model 1906 with the same serial number was built in 1909. If the rifle has been altered, I may just go ahead and see about having someone reline the barrel. A closer examination shows the barrel is shot out. I've done that but I just don't understand what he's telling me to determine what it is chambered for. Which one is unknown.Īlong that line Shrek73 asked that I send a photo of the carrier. This makes me guess the rifle was a short but has been altered to accept a different cartridge. the numbers 22 are surrounded by a diamond stamp, the writing after that has been obscured but straining my eyes it appears I can make out the last two letters as "RT". This made me start thinking this is a modification but the spring loaded feed tube is one piece and not pieced together anywhere along it's length.Īlso is a photo of the rear top of the barrel where it meets the receiver. The tube is split with the lower piece running from the receiver to the center of the rear most hanger. Ok, I always strive to keep my word, so if I've got everything right photos are attached.ĭisassembled you can see the three hangers, and the magazine tube. They are fun and accurate rifles, just make sure your barrel is good. I have a 1906 made in 1911, and shoot it all the time. 22LR will go deep into the recess since the. 22WRF version has the deepest recess, and the. 22LR will fit almost flush with the end of the carrier. The carrier for the S,L,LR version has a deeper recess and the nose of. The Short Only would have a smaller recess in the carrier and the nose of anything longer than a. The carriers recesses differ in depth for the Short, S,L,LR and. The carrier accepts the bullet from the magazine, and if you look at the end you can see where the bullets rest. Regarding the caliber, break it apart and take a picture of the carrier, which will be attached to the lower assembly. The rear magazine ring near the slide has a small pin that you need to drive out before you can remove it and the magazine tube. ![]() The 1890/1906 only has two magazine rings (hangers) and a one piece magazine tube. Yes, I do intend to fire it on a limited basis.Ĭan you post pictures of the rifle? It sounds like yours has been repair or modified. Long and short of it, is this a very unusual rifle because of the full length magazine tube, and three hangers and how can I determine what ammunition it is chambered for without any markings on it ? Following that is a stamping that appears to have been obliterated. In taking it apart for cleaning (it was very dirty and the slide wouldn't even work", I was able to remove the feed tube down to the hanger just above the slide, but there is a second section of tube from the mid point of that hanger into the receiver, which I could not remove out of fear of damaging it.Īlso, on the top of the barrel near the receiver is a stamp with 22 inside a stamped diamond pattern. What I am confused by is the fact the magazine tube has three hangers instead of two, and the tube runs the entire length of the barrel. ![]() This particular rifle by serial number dates to 1895 and is the deluxe version. I have been given a Winchester 1890 and am finding myself perplexed by the rifle I have, and the photos and posts on the internet.
